The Office of the District Attorney exists to ensure the safety of our community.  We handle roughly 7,000 cases per year.  In every prosecution, our Office fights to protect those who cannot otherwise protect themselves.  Ensuring violent, heinous criminals receive severe consequences for their criminal actions remains our highest priority.

The Westmoreland County coroner is responsible for investigating the facts and circumstances of deaths that occur within the county, regardless of where the cause thereof may have occurred. The purpose of the investigation shall be to determine the cause of death and manner of death. The coroner is also responsible to determine whether or not there is sufficient reason to believe that any such death may have resulted from criminal acts or criminal neglect of persons other than the deceased.

The Westmoreland County Recorder of Deeds office is a government office tasked with maintaining public records and documents, especially records relating to real estate ownership that provide persons other than the owner of a property with real rights over that property.

The Westmoreland County Clerk of Courts office is responsible for maintaining the records and dockets for the Court of Common Pleas. It is the mission of the Clerk of Courts to secure and maintain accurate and up-to-date information on all criminal and juvenile proceedings. Our office provides prompt and courteous service to the courts, public, legal community, and media sources in the recording and retrieval of all records placed in our trust. The Clerk of Courts office is also responsible for collecting fines, costs, and restitution, with our main goal being to restore restitution to the victims of crime.

The Clerk of Courts office is an integral part of the Criminal Justice System. The office is dedicated to pursuing the highest standards of public services through the authority and resources made available by law and by the governing body of our jurisdiction.

The Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans’ Court office processes the paperwork in order to facilitate the opening of a decedent’s estate as well matters before the Orphans’ Court. This office handles filings for estates, inheritance tax collection for the state, guardianships, adoptions and marriage licenses. The Register of Wills is a quasi-judicial position and can preside over hearings to determine who should be appointed as executor or administrator of an estate, if necessary.Customers have questions, you have answers. The Prothonotary serves as the chief clerk of the Civil Division of the Court of Common Pleas and is responsible for recording all civil procedures before the court. It is the mission of this office to provide accurate recording of all civil documents and to improve, through innovation and technology, the art of record keeping. It is our continuing goal to operate the office in a cost- effective, accurate, and customer friendly manner while always keeping you, the taxpayers, in mind.  

All records maintained in the Prothonotary office are available for public view unless sealed by the Court. Current filings are electronically scanned and made available for immediate view through e-services public records search. Older documents are located in docket books or microfilm. The Prothonotary is increasing electronic access to these documents through back scanning with the ultimate goal of having complete access to all civil documents via computer image. The public is welcome to conduct research in the Prothonotary office by utilizing the eight public computer terminals within the office.
